Local News: UTBAA launches ''Heroes and Sheroes'' celebration series Black Habits Articles The University of Toronto Black Alumni Association will celebrate the achievements of Black Alumni with the official launch of its "Our Heroes and Sheroes" celebration series on October 27, 2006

The celebration series will consist of a number of events aimed at showcasing the achievements of alumni who have made significant contributions in fields such as literature, science, social work, and finance among others.

"This is about recognizing and celebrating the achievements and contributions of outstanding members of our community." said Rosemarie Nicholas, President of U of T's Black Alumni Association. "We have a lot to be proud of.many of our alumni inspired significant social, political, and economic change at U of T and around the world.that is what we are celebrating.

The Black Alumni Association plans to highlight the achievements of U of T alumni through their "Heroes and Sheroes" Celebration series every month, for the rest of the school year. The first event in the eight month series, will take place on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 6:30 pm at the Trane Studio, 964 Bathurst Street. This event will include performances by award-winning poet, author, and historian Afua Cooper. The event will also feature novelist, playwright, poet, screenwriter, scholar, and winner of the 2001 Governor General's award for poetry, George Elliott Clarke.

"These events will offer an opportunity to draw attention to our alumni that are excelling in their respective fields." said Deborah Navarro, Secretary of the Black Alumni Association. "Their tenacity serves as an inspiration for current U of T students, by demonstrating that it is possible for them to graduate and be counted amongst the many that have triumphed in their respective field."
