Local News: Ontario medical schools graduate few black doctors Black Habits Articles Anderson Ruffin Abbott was the first black man to graduate from the University of Toronto's medical school in 1857

Not a lot has changed since then. In the 1990's, few black students were enrolled as freshmen in the University's medical school.

Dr. Miriam Rossi, the medical school's associate dean of administration, said the number of blacks who were accepted into universities and then chose to go on the in accepted science fields were relatively few. In the early 1990s when the medical school enrolled 255 enrolled each year, two of them were black on average. Since 1994, of the 177 medical students enrolled each year, one or 2 were black on average. Rossi said that that is now being addressed through partnerships with black associations to mentor and recruit black applicants.

Dr Christopher Morgan, a chiropractor, said that of the 2,000 chiropractors working in and around Toronto, less than a dozen are black. Morgan said if young blacks see more black medical professionals, then they may aspire to those careers themselves. He said institutions should partner with associations like the Association for the Advancement of Blacks in Health Sciences and reach out to young people in the black community.
