Local News: Blood Services calls on black community to roll up Black Habits Articles Adom Jeffers rolled up his sleeve and donated blood to help raise awareness for the need for blood within black communities.

“My godbrother has sickle cell (disease) ... so I definitely wanted to do what I can,” he said as he gave blood for the first time.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder affecting the normal function of red blood cells, predominantly affecting black people. It causes anemia, jaundice, kidney and spleen damage, and strokes.

Canadian Blood Services, the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario and the U of T Black Student Association are stepping up a campaign during Black History Month urging African- Canadian communities to donate. - Andre Voshart, for 24 hours
