The singer has been given the starring role in an upcoming, yet-to-be-titled film that will focus on the rise of the late jazz/soul singer Nina Simone, according to MTV News.

The MTV Films/ Paramount Pictures project will follow Simone's rise to fame, which started in the '60s, where she cranked out such hits as "Mississippi Goddam" and "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black." The singer eventually retired in France in the '70s and passed in 2003.

In addition to the film, Blige is prepping the release of her seventh album, The Breakthrough. The 14-track album will include songs produced by Brian Michael Cox, Rodney Jerkins, the Black Eyed Peas' Will I Am, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Dre & Vidal, Johnta Austin and Raphael Saadiq among others.
