World News: New Orleans open for business, can't find enough workers Black Habits Articles New Orleans merchants are finally ready to open the city's fast-food restaurants and fanciest hotels but what they can't find are workers. "Now Hiring" signs have become a common sight throughout the hurricane-ravaged city.

"Two months ago if you were looking for a job, it probably wasn't that easy," said Darren Aucoin, manager of a Shoe Carnival store in a New Orleans suburb that saw minimal flooding. "Now if you can't find a job, you're not trying." Burger King reopened its New Orleans restaurants after bringing in kitchen crews from Baton Rouge, a distance of about 130 km. Now the restaurant chain is offering $6,000 US bonuses to employees agreeing to work full-time for a year in the New Orleans metropolitan area. "The service industry and unskilled labor jobs are the ones really in demand and the people in that category have not come back," said John Trapani, a professor and vice-dean at Tulane University's business school. "There will be a shortage of labour until population starts to return and who knows what percentage is going to return and when?" Thousands of former New Orleans residents were resettled across the U.S. after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Meanwhile, New Orleans marked another milestone this weekend - the return of mass ground transportation. An Amtrak train called the "City of New Orleans" arrived in the Big Easy Saturday with 29 passengers from Chicago.
