Local News: Oscar Peterson goes back to school
A school in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga now bears the name of jazz musician great Oscar Peterson.
The 80-year-old pianist was on hand Tuesday September 6 for the opening of Oscar Peterson Public School.
Peterson can add the honour to a list of accomplishments that includes eight Grammys, 16 honorary degrees and a new Canada Post stamp bearing his picture.
He called the school naming "the most special event so far in my life."
Peterson spent most of the ceremony in the wheelchair that he has used since a stroke in 1993.
During the celebration, youngsters rushed up to shake his hand or have their picture taken with him on the first day of school.
"It's a wonderful opportunity. It's an inspiration for all our teachers and staff who are dedicated to incorporating the arts into the curriculum for the students," said Caroline Mochrie, principal of Oscar Peterson Public School.
