Local News: Afrofest 2006 Black Habits Articles Music Africa presents Toronto’s 18th annual Afrofest, a celebration of African music and culture, free on Saturday July 8th and Sunday July 9th.

Join thousands in the green splendour of Toronto’s Queen's Park to see and hear traditional and contemporary styles by dozens of different African performing groups along with top international touring acts. Come to Queen's Park and discover Africa in heart of Toronto!

Music Africa and Harbourfront Centre present the official launch of Afrofest on Thursday July 6th with a concert by Malian superstar Salif Keita. Tickets at Ticketmaster or Harbourfront Box Office at 416-973-4000 or Afrofest will also have a presence at the Toronto Street Festival with Donne Roberts performing on the Dundas Stage at 1:30pm on Saturday July 8th

Afrofest at Queen’s Park is a showcase of the richness and diversity of African culture and features concerts by many of the continent's greatest musical stars and African music groups from across Canada. Main stage shows are from noon to 10:30pm. The event will be broadcast live on both days from Queen’s Park on CIUT 89.5 FM. This year’s main stage performers include Guinea’s ‘golden voice’ Sekouba Bambino, Rwandan star Jean Paul Samputu, Juno award winners African Guitar Summit, Malian kora master Mamadou Diabate, Cameroonian songstress Muna Mingole, Cape Verde’s Carmen Souza, Halifax based Afro pop sensation Afro Musica, Mali’s Tapa Diarra with Kassoum Diamoutene , the Ijo Vudu African Dance Company, from Nigeria, Ghana’s Ras Israel, Danny from Eritrea, Moroccan Mel M'rabet , Sudan’s Hadi Ahmed and more.

Afrofest has grown to include three different stages and many other activities. Enjoy the children's village area, a drum stage with leading instructors, plus relax “Under the Baobab Tree” with music workshops, poetry and a new youth performance zone, and the usual dazzling display of authentic African arts, crafts and delicious foods in the bustling African marketplace. Also as an added attraction this year is a giant Afrofest Labyrinth. Afrofest is absolutely THE African music event of the summer!
